Choosing a Reputable Breeder


 

A Responsible Breeder:

  • belongs to their regional breed club and/or local breed club.
  • breeds for the betterment of the breed and produces the best possible puppies that they can.
  • will only breed parents that have passing hip, elbow, heart and eye clearances and they WILL provide you copies of them.
  • will provide you with other referrals that they trust, should they have no puppies available at the time you are looking.
  • cares about each and every puppy they have produced for the lifetime of that puppy. They will never turn their backs on you.
  • will NOT use any dog in their breeding program that has shown signs of, or has been diagnosed with, a health or temperment concern.
  • will provide you with references when you ask for them.
  • will ask you as many or more questions than you have asked of them
  • may turn you down for a puppy because they think you would be better off with a different breed of dog or no dog at all (in certain circumstances).
  • will use a clear and concise written contract or agreement when placing a puppy.
  • will offer to watch the puppies if you ever plan on going on vacation to ensure that they know who is taking care of their puppies, and they are not being left at a unknown kennel facility.
  • will normally only breed 1 or 2 litters a year MAX.
  • offer's LIFETIME advice and assistance to you.
  • will take one of their puppies back at anytime in it's life or will assist in finding them a new home.
  • WILL NEVER SELL TO A PET SHOP OR LIKEWISE!!!
  • will only place their puppies with families that they feel comfortable with and that they have already screened (as in a questionnaire, which may be extremely lengthy)
  • will be HONEST with you at ALL TIMES! If you feel the least bit uncomfortable, keep looking!!!!!
  • treats their animals the same way they would want to be treated, if not better!!
  • will NOT allow a puppy to leave their premises any younger than 8 weeks of age. Puppies need this time to socialize and mature with their littermates.
  • will not allow you to leave their premises without the proper paperwork about your puppy, including AKC registration papers, health certificate, immunization record, and feeding guidelines.
  • be able to answer any questions you may have. No questions are "stupid questions" to a repsonsible breeder.
  • will allow you to visit their home, but will NOT allow you to visit the puppies until they have recieved their first set of immunizations.
  • are familiar with their breeds Code Of Ethics and follows them
  • is familiar with their breed standard
  • is knowledgable about the breeds hereditary and congenital diseases and will explain them to you.
